How Did Large Family Moms Know They Could Handle a Large Family?

This week the 4 Moms of 35+ Kids are discussing how we knew we could handle a large family.

The honest truth is that there are times I still don't know if I can handle a large family. I am not naturally patient or organized or energetic. I like to have time to myself, and I don't like to be interrupted.I am selfish and grumpy and sinful.

None of those this is conducive to mothering a large family.

But through a series of events and conversations and readings, I came to realize a few years ago that I can actually grow in patience and develop organizational skills and outgrow my selfishness. And I came to see children as a blessing from the Lord, just like the Bible says they are.

I also saw through reading the scriptures that God uses weak, imperfect people to accomplish His purposes, and that He provides the means and the strength to carry those purposes out. (See Moses, David, Jonah, Joshua, Peter, etc.)

God tells us many times in scriptures that He will guide us, care for us, protect us, give us strength, if we trust in Him.

I've got the weak and imperfect nailed down, so once I put my faith into action, and I must do this daily, then I know I can handle a large family.

Don't forget to read about how the rest of the 4 Moms of 35+ Kids know they can handle a large family.

  1. I love your honest answers here. I get tired at times of people asking me how on earth I have a large family. It is just as you say but I have never been able to put it into such clear words! Thanks!!

  2. So true! My mom certainly didn’t know that she could handle 16 kids until she had all 16 of us and she handled it. I think that’s how all moms of large families are. Just take that first step in faith and know that God will support your every need and you will be ready for however many children He sends you.

  3. I love how you put it, “There are times I still don’t know if I can handle a large family.” I feel the same way, too, and we only have four children. Sometimes, I look around and wonder how I do it, how I mother all four of them. Thank you for your honesty from someone else who likes to have time to herself with no interruptions.

  4. We just take it day by day. I never set out to have 6 children. Thru the struggles of infertiliy and miscarriages. I was and am blessed to be my boys mother. We take it day by day and wu itch faith in god.

  5. New visitor! and follower! Mom of six-
and I was hoping your answer would be “I still don’t know if I DO know how to handle a large family!”
That’s my answer, but living it a day at a time, loving it, hating it, and covered in the grace of God! :)
