Kitchen Tip – Kids Peeling Potatoes

My kids love to help me peel potatoes and I appreciate having extra hands to do the work in getting dinner ready.

Sometimes, though, they get a little crazy with the peeler and take some skin off of a finger tip, but my 9 year old came up with an ingenious solution to that problem!

She put on a pair of rubber gloves before she started peeling! She was able to peel 9 potatoes for our dinner without a single shaved finger!

  1. Awesome! My older two can peel potatoes for me. It’s nice to have helpers.

  2. That is genius! My girls love to peel carrots, but we have the same problem. Thanks for the solution!

  3. What a great idea!! Such girly looking kitchen gloves–how cute.

  4. Brilliant! We will be using this tip very soon! 😀

  5. What a great idea! :)

  6. She’s a thinker! Peeling, cutting, and dicing is one thing I really do not enjoy doing, and it holds me back from cooking meals that involve it. I can’t wait to my son is old enough to really help. Right now, I’m just kind of showing him the ropes.

  7. Why not just get them the new gloves that peel potatoes simply by rubbing them between your hands? Then no worries about shaving off fingertips since there are no blades. 😀 Personally though, I prefer leaving the skins on – that’s where all the nutrients are!

  8. Reminds me of peeling potatoes when we were kids–my parents bought a dozen potato peelers, and we would all gather around the kitchen table and peel huge piles of potatoes. We thought it was great fun!

  9. Heather says:

Clever girl! Ever grate a knuckle trying to shred cheese? I bet that trick would work there as well.

  10. Heather took he words right out of my mouth! I was just going to mention the same thing about grating cheese. I might have to adopt that trick with the grater.

  11. I’ll never forget the time my oldest daughter came wailing to me – showing her bloody fingertip – “Mom! I peeled off part of my body!!” :)

She survived just like the other potato-peeling children in our family have – but this is a great tip – will pass it on to my crew!
