Welcome to the 4 Moms Breakfast Linky!

This week we are sharing breakfast ideas and recipes.  Would you like to see what the other Moms serve for breakfast?

As for me, there are periods of times when I prepare a hearty homemade breakfast every morning like:

  • baked oatmeal (a family FAVORITE!)
  • pancakes and bacon
  • apple fritters and sausage
  • good old fashioned scrambled eggs with sausage, biscuits, and homemade country gravy
  • homemade Pop Tarts with this homemade pie crust recipe  ("How To" coming soon!)
  • homemade granola bars (another "How To" to come!)
  • homemade cinnamon rolls
  • monkey bread
  • Hummingbird cake (contains bananas, pineapples, and nuts)

And then there are other periods, like those months when I have a nursing baby who wants to be fed when she wants to be fed and if anyone has any ideas contrary to that schedule of events, she will be sure to let you know in no uncertain terms that she most definitely does NOT appreciate your disregard for her timeline, that I let the kids forage around in the pantry for boxed cereal, store bought Pop Tarts, or a loaf of bread so they can make themselves some toast.

I like to think of the latter as teaching survival skills. You never know when one of them might want to be on one of those reality survival shows and I just bet foraging comes in handy during those auditions.

At least that's what I tell myself when I'm trying to fall asleep at night.

Oh, who am kidding? I never have trouble falling asleep.

In any case, my breakfast making fervor waxes and wanes and right now we are more in a "wane" mode.  Which I would like to go on record as saying is perfectly permissible when a newborn baby is in the picture.

Or a new anything for that matter. New school year. New house (which my Facebook fans know is in our picture). 

My point is that I don't believe it will damage a child in any way to eat cold cereal for breakfast that he has poured for himself. Of course, it would not be my  preference  that my children eat this for the first meal of the day, but I have learned to give myself a break when circumstances call for it.

  1. Hahaha! Foraging in the pantry is definitely a survival skill! It’s one my children know all too well. LOL

  2. You never have trouble falling asleep? Please do tell: how do you turn your brain off at night? I thought only men had no trouble falling asleep at night.
    To be able to close my eyes and just start snoring– amazing male trait.

  3. I agree with you Connie, while I prefer to eat a hot breakfast, we have cereal once a week. My biggest issue with cereal is that my kids are starving at 10 am if they have cereal breakfast. Other breakfasts hold them over until lunchtime!

  4. I can’t wait for the pop tart how-to. My kids have never had a pop tart. I’m that cruel. This summer when staying with family they watched jealously as their cousins ate them for breakfast each morning. I would love to be able to make a somewhat healthier version of this American junk food for my kids to get to indulge in.


  5. We’ve done the home-made pop tart thing, too, but it had to be a treat, not breakfast. We just are all crabby and starving in an hour if we don’t have a good protein in our breakfast.

    New house? Ooooh.

  6. I’m Super Mum, when my kids are left foraging for cold cereal it’s home made. I make it once or twice a month so they have something to forage for.

    Or maybe a real Super Mum would breed children who can tolerate more foods so she doesn’t HAVE to make the cereal. Lol. Though I guess Super Mum’s kids would never have to forage. There goes the spandex costume.

    Oh, and does my 13 month old count as newborn? Just wondering.

    So, true about things changing when a newborn is in the house…we all must learn to adjust ~ so breakfast gets altered to simplicity…lots of yogurt, frozen pancakes/waffles/muffins and fruit…do-it-yourself type of breakfasts. 😉

    Apple fritters…what fun! And I look forward to your “How-to” post on pop-tarts. My children would be so thrilled to have that sweet treat (made healthier?)…since we NEVER buy them. 😉

  8. LOVE this post. I totally agree about the NEW baby logic! (typing as I hold my 3 mos. old) I go to bed many nights with mommy guilt over not wanting to get up and fixing healthy breakfasts. :0) Thanks for keeping it real!

  9. Thank you-I’m sure that it is better to have a happy, sane mother and eat cold cereal than one who is over stressed with a crying baby. We tend to have toast or cereal with less excuse!

  10. Pancakes are our favorite breakfast. I usually have some in the freezer from making pancakes for dinner.

  11. Lol – I love this, Connie. “Teaching survival skills” – that was the thinking behind my letting the kids eat spilled cold cereal off the floor. Think of all the important life lessons they learned from that!! :)
    The more kids we have, the more relaxed we get, right?
